What is a travel cake?

Travel cake, also known as "journey cake" or "trail cake," is a type of cake that has historical significance as a portable food for long journeys, and it has also been used as a thoughtful gift to share with others. It is believed to have originated in Europe during the medieval period as a dense cake that could withstand the rigours of travel without spoiling it, making it a convenient source of sustenance for travellers, explorers, and pioneers.

Over time, travel cake became not only a practical food for long journeys but also a type of gifting cake that was carried along to be shared with others. When visiting friends, family, or acquaintances during their travels, it was common for people to bring travel cakes as gifts. The cakes were often durable and portable, wrapped in cloth or parchment paper to keep them fresh and protected, making them easy to transport without getting damaged.

Bringing a travel cake as a gift was a gesture of hospitality and goodwill, showing the recipient that the traveller had taken the time and effort to prepare a thoughtful gift to share. It created opportunities to bond over food and create memorable moments while on a journey, as the cake was enjoyed and savoured together. The type of travel cake brought as a gift could also reflect the traveller's cultural or regional traditions, adding a personal touch to the gesture.

Today, while travel cakes may be less commonly used as practical food for long journeys, they continue to be appreciated as a meaningful and delicious gift combining the joy of sharing food with the excitement of travel, creating memorable experiences and connections with others the way.

Why is it called financier?

The name "financier" is believed to have originated in the financial district of Paris in the late 19th century. It is said that the almond cake was created by a baker who wanted to make a treat that was easy for bankers to enjoy on the go, as it was small, portable, and not too messy to eat. The traditional shape of the financier is said to resemble a gold bar or a bar of gold bullion, which further reinforces its association with finance.

Financiers are popular in France and are often dusted with powdered sugar before serving and can be served plain or with additional toppings such as fruits, whipped cream, or glazes for added flavour and presentation.
